Hey the other day I bought a 5.1 sound card and some 5.1 Philips speakers, not cheap may I add, however whenever the sound is up vaguely loud, I get this awful hissing like there is a dodgy connection with electrics, any ideas as to how to stop this?

Jon.

Check your connectors for dust
Make sure drivers are properly installed
Make sure wires are away from electrical interference
Upgrade speaker wire

Yep, symptom of a poor connection. On good quality speakers this can even mean using cheap speaker cable.

I was getting some hiss from high-frequency guitar on my hi-fi system the other day and it was down to me having bi-wired them using a bit of cheap speaker cable I had lying about. Put them back to single-wiring with the good quality flat copper cable I bought at the hi-fi shop and it went away.

are they the Philips MMS 460? black and sort of hexagonal in shape? about £60/£70?

if they are, mine did that for the full 13 months I had them till they went "pop" (literally) and I replaced them with some JBL EXcite ones

if you can.. take them back and get some good ones.

the JBL were on https://www.Overclockers.co.uk in their clearance section and are AWESOME!

May i also suggest you check your advanced sounds settings in control panel?
sometimes things like having mic enabled can cause hissing .

I'd suggest you take the philips speakers back & get your money back, make an excuse or something. If they're not already faulty then Its only a matter of time before they are. The firm I work for are the main philips repairer for the uk and we got so much stuff you would not believe. We also sell on the refurbished stuff at discounted prices.
