That's the Tengai model, which is a bit more road friendly. The proper "hummer" KLR looks like this:

I was looking at the aprilia pegaso and in looking at it thinking well if I crash what will need doing and what is the cost of it. In the uk not that bad (ish) but im doing the baltic sea and if I come off out there it will be big CASH and, 3/4 of the shops will not know aprilia
(dont quote me on that it is form a aprilia shop it tock the man 1 week to find out and he still did'nt think it was right??). So now weee strom (dl650) is coming out on top by a long way for the baltic trip. For info on bikes look at www.motorcycle.calsci.com as well as good info on most bikes it has full wiring diagrams, parts catalog and the full service manual all for you to download FREE Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

B*gger! if you were anywhere down south my old man was selling his 1997 F650 for a grand! F*cking bargain!

That said, it'd probably be worth forking out the extra cash to get your hands on one of these, my dad rode from our home in Dubai, United Arab Emirates to our house is the south west of UK. It took him 14 days and covered just over 7,000 miles. The only problem he had with the bike was the sidestand kill switch.

Mechanically they're fairly simple machines just big CC single pots, hell i'd even had a play with the engine before he buggered off, and he fitted road biased tyres BUT with really deep tread meaning he used it in mud, sand, rain and road.

My dad's downsized now to an XR400 and is gonna be changing the tyres again for more road biased jobbies and looking after it as we're going round the world in about 3 years time. He loves it to bits because it's so mechanically simple! That said i've ridden 100 KMS from Dubai to Hatta to do some serious trail riding with my mates and my arse was knackered. So you're best off with something with a wider seat.

Honestly it'd be worth the extra cash to get an F650, i'm not saying buy it brand new, you may be able to pick up a second hand one quite cheap. Hope this helps and let us know if you're up for a round the world trip in a few years. Thumbs Up

EDIT: He let me have a ride of it before he sold it on it was a fantastic bike to ride! crack open the throttle and your away it could probably cruise at about 160/170 kmh for your Autobhan but it definitley won't beat the porsches Laughing

From personal experience of owning one I would recommend the Cagiva Navigator, a Suzuki TL1000 powered Gran Canyon, it's comfortable enought to sit on all day every day, got bags of power, top speed around 135mph.
The only thing you would have to do is get the front wheel changed, possibly one off the elephant or get it re-rimmed, cos its not easy finding dual purpose tyres to fit the original one on it.
You can buy them with full hard luggage and still have room for throw-overs etc.
Its got 20 litre fuel capacity, giving around 160-180 mile range depending on speed.
I cut an inch an a half off each end of the bars and put on handlebar guards and a higher screen to give a bit more protection against the weather.
Its the most useful and enjoyable bike i've owned in 28 years and i've had lots of sportbikes including a gixer thou.

Ola

Ok..... down to crunch time...
I have two motorbikes to choice from....
1. BWM 650 Dakar 2002 with 5500km on the clock
2. Honda African Twin 750 1999 with 21000km on the clock
They are going for the same price.....

This is what i like about the Honda..... It's hard to find, no one want's to sell theirs ( that means it a reliable bike).
It has a bigger engine for the long tar roads.... before you can get to the dirt. More wind perfection in the design of the bike.

The BMW is a better looking bike.... lighter for the rough dirt.... It's a newer bike...

That's all i can think of for now......
What say the peps out there..... what should i go for and why??

Thanks,
Bruno

I'd say go for the yam 660 tenere, I might be a bit biased though Laughing

I don't find it any trouble on the motorway and have only ever done very light off roading on it but its fine so far Thumbs Up

I'd probably swap mine for an africa twin given the chance though.
